It depends on the scope of the project, but here’s a general guide. A 10-yard dumpster works for small bathroom remodels, garage cleanouts, or minor landscaping projects. It holds about three pickup truck loads.
A 15-yard dumpster is the most common choice for medium-sized renovations—think kitchen remodels, flooring removal from multiple rooms, or deck tear-outs. It holds about four and a half pickup truck loads. A 20-yard dumpster is what you want for whole-home cleanouts, large construction projects, or roof replacements. It holds about six pickup truck loads.

In North Charleston, if the dumpster is going on the street or public right-of-way, yes, you need a permit. If it’s going on your driveway or private property, you don’t. The permit process isn’t complicated, but it does take a little time, so it’s better to handle it before delivery day.
We’ll walk you through what’s required. Typically, you’ll need to contact the city, fill out a short application, and pay a small fee. The city wants to know where the dumpster will be, how long it’ll be there, and that it won’t block traffic or create a safety issue.
If you’re in a neighborhood with an HOA, check with them too. Some have rules about where dumpsters can be placed and how long they can stay. We’ve delivered thousands of dumpsters in this area, so we know which streets are tight, which neighborhoods are picky, and how to position the dumpster so it’s accessible but not in the way. If you have questions, ask. We’d rather spend five minutes on the phone than have you deal with a citation.
Hazardous materials are the big ones—paint, chemicals, asbestos, oil, gasoline, pesticides, and anything flammable or toxic. Those require special disposal and can’t go in a standard roll-off dumpster. Most electronics are also restricted, though some can be handled separately if you coordinate with us first.
Certain appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners contain refrigerants that need to be removed before disposal. Tires are another common item that can’t go in. Mattresses and box springs are sometimes restricted depending on local disposal facility rules, so ask before you toss them in.
Everything else—construction debris, furniture, household junk, yard waste, old flooring, drywall, shingles, wood, metal—goes in without issue. If you’re unsure about something specific, just call and ask. We’d rather clarify upfront than have to leave something behind at pickup because it’s not allowed. We’re not trying to be difficult. These restrictions come from the landfill and county regulations, and we’re required to follow them just like everyone else.
Our pricing is flat-rate, which means the weight limit is built into the cost for typical projects. You’re not going to hit the limit with normal household junk, construction debris, or renovation waste. Where people run into trouble is when they load the dumpster with dense, heavy materials—concrete, dirt, brick, stone, or roofing shingles piled six feet high.
If you know you’re disposing of heavy materials, tell us upfront. We can recommend the right size dumpster and set expectations on weight so there are no surprises. In the rare case that a dumpster does go over the weight limit, there’s an overage fee. We don’t like charging it, and you don’t like paying it, so we’d rather help you avoid it from the start.
Most customers never deal with this. But if you’re doing a project that involves a lot of concrete, stone, or dirt, it’s worth a conversation before delivery. We’ll make sure you’re set up correctly so you’re not stuck with an extra bill at the end.
Standard rental periods are 3 or 10 days, depending on what you choose when you book. That’s enough time for most projects. If you need it longer, just let us know. We’re flexible. There’s no penalty for calling and asking for an extension if your project is taking longer than expected.
Where it gets tricky is if you don’t communicate. If the rental period ends and we show up to pick up the dumpster but it’s not ready or we can’t access it, you’ll get charged for another day. That’s avoidable. Just call or text us if you need more time.
Most people underestimate how long a project will take. That’s fine. We get it. But if you’re three days into a five-day rental and you know you’re not going to be done, give us a heads-up. We’ll adjust the schedule and make sure the pickup happens when it’s actually convenient for you. No drama, no extra trips, no wasted time on either end.
